Salt has always looked too ordinary to command history, which is one reason it commanded so much of it. Before refrigeration, salt was preservation, taxation, military logistics, trade leverage, and state power compressed into a mineral people could hold in their hands. Armies marched because salt kept food viable. Cities rose where salt routes crossed. Empires learned quickly that controlling it meant controlling the terms of survival.
